Everyone loves babies! Allan and I love photographing babies in what I jokingly refer to as their natural habitat, which of course, just means in the family home. Although we have a beautifully appointed studio in which we could conduct newborn sessions, I have always preferred to do it in the client's home. It just seems more natural and everyone is comfortable in their own space. Plus I can incorporate elements of the baby's nursery into the images. Or the parent's can quickly and easily change or comfort the infant. Everyone is happy when the baby is happy.
Newborn sessions can take several hours to complete depending on the little ones feeding and sleeping schedule, or lack thereof. We ask parents to schedule the newborn session within two weeks of birth, but sometimes the parents prefer to wait until the baby is a little bit older. This is the case with the little guy featured in this post. He's a little older, but no less adorable!
Natural light is preferred when we photograph newborns but often the weather is uncooperative so we always come equipped with studio lighting and reflectors so we can easily employ whatever additive light is needed. On the day of this session, I was able to use window light and take advantage of the low light capabilities of the Canon 5d MIII. Soft light is so flattering for babies and flash is much too harsh. Allan and I typically work together on newborn sessions, but on this day Allan was in Nashville on a video shoot so I just used a reflector. The parents are often eager to assist and can often be called upon to hold a reflector which can come in handy.
Even though the primary subject of our newborn sessions is the baby, I always ask the parents to get involved in a couple of images. Sometimes just their hands holding or touching the baby creates a must-have image. Capturing the family dynamic is so much fun. Brand-new parents are especially exciting!
Parents are asked to have several outfit changes on hand to get a variety of looks. During the appointment booking or consultation I will discuss where the parents would like to display images or if they would like to have an album designed. Or both! This helps us better plan the images we will capture during the session. Newborn sessions are so much fun and one of the best ways for parents to remember the earliest moments of their baby's life.
