Tour Divide | Eleanor's Endeavor

Inspiration. Determination.

Local Knoxville, Tennessee mountain biker Eleanor McDonough is participating in the Tour Divide race from Banff, Alberta, Canada to the US-Mexico border at Antelope Wells, NM. This 2745 mile bicycle race began on June 12, 2015, and will take self-supported riders through windswept valleys and mountain passes of the Continental Divide to the badlands of the Mexican Plateau. With a completion time of about 3 weeks, this race is well suited for the ultra-fit and those willing to get out of their comfort zone.

Allan had the opportunity to photograph Eleanor (and her two adorable dogs) on the mountain bike trails near her home a few weeks before her departure to Bannf and I met her recently if ever so briefly, at the Appalachian Mountian Bike Club Epic Weekend at Big South Fork. Eleanor, or E as she is known to her close friends and supporters from the bicycle community, has been training intensely for this race and will require all of her energy to strategically ride the remote Great Divide Mountain Bike Route safely, speedily and skillfully. She'll travel over pavement, gravel roads, four-wheel-drive roads, singletrack and old railroad beds achieving over 200,000 feet in elevation gain along the way. I encourage you to read the description of the trail route as it is steeped in history and you will have a greater sense of the trials and tribulations riders are facing on this quest. Frigid nights, hot days and the possibility of bad weather are taken in stride.

Eleanor is riding to raise funds for Musella Foundation to benefit her older brother who has survived brain cancer for 11 years as well as other cancer patients and their families. Click here for more information or to make a donation. Follow Eleanor's progress here and track the progress of all the riders here.

As a novice mountain biker and someone who has never logged 100 miles in one day on my bicycle, let alone every day for nearly one month, I am fascinated by the dedication and training of these riders. Females typically average around 93 miles a day with a completion time of just under 30 days. That's a lot of time in the saddle on long stretches of formidable terrain, alone, with only the supplies and resources you can carry on your bicycle! This is certainly not a race for the unprepared.

There are some very strict rules to this race and one is that no one aside from locals of the towns the ride passes through can have any interactions with participants and then it may only be brief. This is one of the reasons I find it so important to Eleanor's friends and family to have access to the tracking website so they can be there with her as best they can. Ever since hearing about Eleanor's ride I have tried to imagine myself taking the same journey and I can't fathom the amount of training and preparation she's gone through. She's in my thoughts as she traverses the country and makes her way south. Please keep her in yours as well.

Help Put Tennessee on the Downhill Trail Map

HELP PUT TENNESSEE ON THE
DOWNHILL TRAIL MAP!

Recently I asked you to vote for Knoxville in the semi-finals of the Bell Helmets $100,000 #BellBuilt trail building grant. We won that round so today (woohoo!), I am asking for your vote again. Can you dig it?

Knoxville is one of three national finalists for a $100,000 grant from Bell Helmets. When our city wins, the Southeast’s first world-class public downhill mountain bike trail will be built - right here in our Urban Wilderness. But it can't happen without all of us!

Go to bellhelmets.com/bell-built and select the Urban Wilderness Gravity Trail to help send Knoxville downhill! Voting ends Thursday, June 4, so VOTE TODAY! Use every email address you have! And share the link and info with everyone you know whether they live in Knoxville or not. Knoxville is representing the entire East Coast in the finals.

For more information and a selection of awesome graphics to share on social media and in emails to all your peeps, visit downtowndownhill.com. Be sure to check out and shares the videos! They are awesome!

Allan and I are proud to be a part of the mountain biking community in East Tennessee and providing them with images to use on the marketing collateral for this campaign. If you're into mountain biking, we'd love to ride with you! Give us a call at 865.659.3273 or email us at lisa@almphoto.com and we'll hit the Urban Wilderness or Sharp's Ridge one day soon.

I am also proud of the community support this campaign is receiving. So many people are posting the links and images on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram that it's almost all that is in my local social media feed. We're up against CA and MN, but as of right this moment we're leading our closest competitor by only 2000 points. We need to continue the momentum and keep adding votes, so I thank you in advance for yours. Please share this post or any of social media posts to help spread the word!

Vote for Knoxville for the Bell Built Grant for an Urban Gravity Trail!

DIG THIS.

As you may know, Allan and I are mountain bikers.

(This is that awkward moment when I realize that I don't have a single photo of me or Allan on a mountain bike...because we're always the ones taking the photos! So, just pretend you can see a slick photo of me with sweat and mud covering my face, legs and arms as I careen, in complete control, down a steep, rocky trail. I look good, right?)

Allan has been biking for years and I am relatively new to the sport but love learning to ride over rocks and roots, down hills and well, up hills too. If you live in Knoxville, you may know we have a fairly extensive trail system in the Urban Wilderness located near Ijams Nature Center in South Knoxville, IC King also in South Knoxville, Concord in West Knoxville as well as a growing number of trails at Sharps Ridge in North Knoxville.

#DowntownDownhill, #BellBuilt, Bell-Built, gravity trail, Knoxville, Tennessee, mountain bike trail

If you love to mountain bike, Knoxville has something for everyone, except a super-technical downhill gravity trail. And that's where the Bell Helmet's Bell-Built trailbuilding grant comes in. Bell, in association with International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA), is awarding one $100,000 grant to fund the project for one of the nine semi-finalist's from the West coast, midwest and East coast. Knoxville, through its sponsor Appalachian Mountain Bike Club (AMBC), is in the East coast semi-final round competing against Timber Trail in Alabama and Gorges Jump Line in North Carolina and voting ends on May 24th. The East coast semifinal winner will be announced and then another round of voting will determine the winner from the three semifinalists. So, when Knoxville wins, I'll be asking you to vote again to help make the dream of #DowntownDownhill come true! (The Downtown Downhill website has lots of social media friendly graphics and info to help you spread the word!)

So, the whole point of this post is two-fold, first to clue you in to the awesomeness of Knoxville's mountain biking trail system and community and second, to ask you to vote for Knoxville for the #BellBuilt trailbuilding grant. It's really easy to vote and will only take a minute, and another minute to click on the confirmation email, so two minutes tops!

Oh, and ALM Photo took the photos you see in the project story! We love the Appalachian Mountain Bike Club (AMBC) and everything they do to make Knoxville a rad place to mountain bike!

Please vote for Knoxville and share this information with all of your friends whether they mountain bike or not. because 70,000 people make a living off of the outdoor industry in Tennessee, recreational bicycling is a $200 billion industry in the US, property values next to trails and greenways are up to 30% higher and for every dollar spend on bicycling tourism $7 is spent in the locations they visit.

Oh, and don't forget to give us a call to photograph your next social or company event! From red carpets to fundraisers to corporate retreats, we can cover it all. Give me a call at 865-406-3870 or send me an email for a quote. And we also love to shoot action!

Trail Blazing with Appalachian Mountain Bike Club

Appalachian Mountain Bike Club is blazing trails in Knoxville, TN

Mountain biking is awesome. Enough said.

Allan has been mountain biking for many years and has been trying to get me on board with the sport for about 7+ years. This year I finally got the hang of it and have really been enjoying it. It helped that Allan took the clipless pedals off my bike and let me ride with flats. I'm less freaked out about crashing with my bike still attached to my feet!

Allan joined the Appalachian Mountain Bike Club last year to become more involved in the mountain biking community in East Tennessee and has worked a couple of trail work days with them, but Sunday was my first time swinging a hoe. It was a blast! I now want my own Rogue Hoe!

While Allan was wandering around taking all these awesome photos, I was swinging that hoe and meeting some really cool folks. There were a lot of people our age and older which was amazing. I love spending my time around people who don't think life ends at 40! And who love being outside doing physical activities.

Nearly 50 people showed up at 9AM on a Sunday morning to work on the trails at Sharps Ridge in North Knoxville, about midway between Downtown and Fountain City. The good folks over at Fountain City Pedaler provided a delicious lunch of tacos for us when we finished up about 11:30AM. Oh, and there was beer too! I was in heaven!

Speaking of Fountain City Pedaler, there was an article in the News Sentinel about Luke Grieve's involvement with trail building in Knoxville and the AMBC. Pretty cool! It was nice that they included one of Allan's photos in the story too.

If you are interested in learning more about the trails and mountain biking opportunities in Knoxville, pop over to the AMBC Facebook page or website and become a member. Or drop by Fountain City Pedaler, Cedar Bluff Cycles, Tennessee Valley Bicycles or the Bike Zoo, to name a few local bike shops with a passion for trails.

Here are more photos from Sunday and you can see everyone was having a great time.

For some folks, like Allan and I, it was a rare day to hang out with family and friends!

We look forward to seeing you on the trails soon!
